For this project, we aimed to reflect the beauty of the Meramec River and Great Rivers Greenway by painting engaging murals on the piers of the I-44 and Route 66 bridges crossing the river.
For preliminary preparation, a mockup was installed on the designated bridge pier according to the preconstruction meeting guidelines. The bridge piers were then diamond-ground to remove concrete splatter from the original pour and any debris that could not be cleared through power washing. Ten piers underwent a detergent wash and a 5,000 psi pressure water rinse to prepare the surface.
Once the piers were sufficiently dry, we applied a prime coat of Sherwin-Williams Macropoxy 646 Fast Cure Epoxy to the entire mural area on all ten piers, as outlined in the plan sheet. Using a pounce pattern, we transferred the outline of each color onto each bridge pier.
Next, the murals received two brush-applied color coats of Sherwin-Williams Hi-Solids Polyurethane, following the plan elevations. Finally, a full coat of Sherwin-Williams 2K Water-Based Urethane coating was applied to the entire mural area for protection against vandalism and graffiti.
The quality of work executed by the BAZAN team on this project ensures that these murals will stand as a lasting tribute to the Meramec Region for decades to come.
